Learning to Drive in the UK: A Complete Guide
Provisional Driving Licence
Before you can drive on public roads or take the theory test, you must have a valid Provisional Driving Licence. You can apply using the DVLA Form D1, available at Post Offices, or apply online through the official GOV.UK website.
You can apply up to 3 months before your 16th birthday, but the licence only becomes valid when you turn 17. Until then, you cannot drive on public roads or take your theory test.
To apply online, you must:
- Be a resident of Great Britain
- Meet the minimum age and eyesight requirements
- Not be disqualified from driving
- Pay by debit/credit card (Mastercard, Visa, etc.)
- Have a valid UK passport or other ID
- Provide address history for the last 3 years
If you have a UK passport, the DVLA can use that photo. Otherwise, you’ll need to submit a photo separately.
Theory Test
You must pass the theory test before booking your practical driving test.
The test has two parts:
- Multiple Choice – 57 questions, 50-minute limit. Some questions are based on a short silent video of a driving scenario.
- Hazard Perception – A series of clips showing everyday road situations. Each clip contains at least one developing hazard (one will have two). You’ll score up to 5 points per clip by identifying hazards early.
You must pass both parts to receive your theory certificate.
Note: The real test questions are not published, so revision materials may differ slightly.
Practical Test
Once you're confident in your driving skills, you can book your practical test. Booking times can vary, so confirm car and instructor availability before scheduling.
During the test, there’s an independent driving section lasting around 20 minutes, where you'll either follow a Sat Nav or road signs.
- Book your practical test here
- Always check with your instructor before booking.
